Split Rail in a larger version, I've seen it called other things.... from my stash of blues, using up some leftovers, a nice addition to my living room. This pattern was a tablecloth for a round table I saw in a magazine and adapted it to use as a lap quilt.

Tall Tails or Braid, I've seen many names for this one. I actually "invented" my own way to create this look which was much easier than the directions in the book "Laps from Fats". These are whimsical kid prints collected from scraps and donations. A great way to use up strips or even split rail blocks left over from other quilts.

This quilt was made for a new baby boy of a customer of ours. They weren't able to have kids so adopted a sweet little girl from China.....who also got a quilt.....and then....as those things happen....they have had a lovely boy. It all needed celebrating for sure!

Not sure why the top photo has a yellow cast, this one is more true to color.

Chasing the Winter blues! I just had to do something to bring some sunshine into my livingroom so I pulled out the tulip remnant and flipped through my collection of magazines to find this pattern..Sunny Days. (go to quiltmag.com to find the pattern!) I'm still working on quilting it by hand. In the meantime, it's doing it's job of brightening the corner of my livingroom!

This pillow is made from a couple of leftover squares that I sent off to my friend to do the same for her.

Molly loves her quilt! It was a late present for turning 5 and getting her own bed after sharing.

I had worked on this one by laying it out on the guest bed. Molly went up to check out her quilt spread on the bed and didn't come down.....and this is why. She loved it so much she curled up and fell asleep.

. It's a Trip around the World pattern. The border and backing fabric are on the bed next to her.

Large Flannel squares and rectrangles, this fabric was given to me by the Fabric Fairy so I made it up and donated it to the fundraiser for the adoption expenses for Wisley.

The photo at left is a closeup of the quilting done by a lady in Bethel. Wish I could afford to get all of my quilts done!

Snails Tail is the name of this pattern. I saw it on the website Aboutquilts.com in beige and brown but thought that any contrast would be good and I think it is! This one is for our latest grandbaby Eliot who delights us like all the rest!

This one is a bit tricky because of the odd measurements of triangles but it wasn't too tedious. I decided to do the borders to flow into the swirls rather than box it in.

Crows Fence....renamed One in Every Crowd. This one is from the book named "Laps from Fats" officially called Crows Fence but it named itself One in Every Crowd because of the different corners. This was a graduation gift for my nephew, not sure if he ever got one of Aunties Quilts so now he does.

Notice the corners don't match, hence the name.

"Take Three" is the name of this cute and easy quilt. I loved this cat fabric, I wish I had bought more of it! This one went to a great nephew in one of the Carolinas, can't keep track of all these kids coming and going. Luckily I had the Grandmother's address so sent it off!

"Lincoln Logs" is the name of these two quilts. I cut three at once...I don't recommend that....because I needed to do two wedding lap quilts. I love this backing fabric, of course I'm partial to blues.

This is from the quilt book More Laps From Fats....say that three times fast! So if you do the math, yes, I have enough pieces cut out for another one which is my intention to do one for myself, I love it so much. I included some blueberry pieces and call it my Maine quilt, blue skies, blue seas and lakes, and blueberries....life couldn't be better. The border is a nice finish, all little pieces done like piano keys. Now where did I put those extra pieces?

"Brick Wall" is the name of this baby quilt. Same set of pieces as the last one but my neighbor gave me a new pattern and inspiration hit....This one has been sent off to a great niece of Bruce's down in Virginia, Emma. I think 30's reproduction fabrics are perfect for a sweet baby girl named Emma. My stock of those fabrics is getting depleted with so many babies being born. I'm still about 4 quilts behind!

"Quiet Time" is the name of this 30's reproduction quilt. I love the soft, sentimental look of those older fabrics. This one is for the daughter of a loooong time employee (who has left our employ but not our "family"). She Finally had a baby girl last summer, the spitting image of her beautiful Momma.

"Floral Throw" was the name of this one....but I think it's a Summer Garden. My quilting buddy gave me this pattern and one snowy day, I just had to sew florals! This one went to my beloved Virginia SIL. Hope you enjoy it!

1930's Reproduction Fabrics....again! This pattern came in an advertisement for quilting magazines. I used the pattern but didn't buy the magazine!

This is one of my favorite patterns for a baby quilt, I will definately try it again when the need arises. This one is for my cousin Barbie and soon to be born baby daughter Olivia. Can't wait to hear the news!

Nine Patch, an old fashioned pattern, done with more of those beautiful reproduction fabrics. This quilt went to a former employee who had a baby in February. I put flannel on the back for cuddling brought the back to front instead of binding it. Simple but soooo sweet.

I thought I was getting low on repros but a friend dropped off a few more pieces to incorporate in upcoming projects and I'm currently working on another variation with some of my repro scraps. My bins runneth over.

Take 3 pattern, this quilt was long overdue for a grand nephew in Maryland. Ky turned one year old this month and celebrated by graduating out of the helmet he'd worn since birth to re-shape his head.

I added a second border onto this basic size because of his age, and chose the baseball fabric, no sissy baby stuff for him! The Stevens family are BIG on baseball so hope he loves it for a long time.

Here is the detail for Oliver's quilt. I put a binding made of little star fabric, a last minute find but great addition. The back is a plaid flannel, so cuddly. Can't wait til he comes on Friday to test drive it!

1930's reproduction fabrics, 4" squares set on point. I love the soft look of these fabrics,...I think this is the 4th one I've made.... I'll soon be running out of scraps!

The back is pink plaid flannel, for cuddling the new great niece to be born....soon?.....I hope so for the Mom's sake!

Christmas gifts:

Black cat quilt is for a dear lady customer who lost her cat. She is quite crippled up with arthritis so a trip to the shop is a good outing for her.

The second one is a simple nine patch done in 30's reproduction fabrics. I had a big stack of 4x4 squares so I'll be making a few baby quilts from them. This one is for a baby adopted from China by a couple who are regular Saturday morning customers. I have two more in the works for babies due in February....

Another Wedding quilt, this one for my niece, Kristin, who married October 4th. I was in the waiting room the day she was born and so I felt she needed an auntie quilt for her wedding.

The photo is washed out I'm sorry to say because the colors are really very warm and rich. This is made with scraps of flannel in a variation of the Split Rail Fence. My neighbor, a fellow quilter, had the pattern in a book so I decided to give it a try. The border is made of more scraps which happened to be 6 inches wide and varying lengths.

Another "pastime" of mine, photographing flowers and scenes that I think I might use in watercolor paintings sometime. This is the front garden at the cottages we stayed at in Belfast. The cottages slope down to the ocean with view of the harbor of Penobscot Bay. The white birches are from Moose Point, a state park, a couple of miles further along route 1.

Here is Gabriel's quilt and he looks quite happy doesn't he? Maybe it's the quilt or maybe it's being cuddled by his brother Logan!

This is actually a quilt top that I made quite awhile ago and put red borders on it. (it's on here somewhere, maybe called Ribbon Candy) I loved it so much, I wouldn't give it to anyone where I wouldn't get to see it again.....us quiltey people are weird huh?.......so when I heard that this latest (number 9 grandchild) was going to be a boy, I got busy and changed the borders to suit the occasion. The boys' bedroom is blue and yellow so I didn't want quite so much red in it.

I forgot to get a picture of Gabriel on his quilt, maybe his Mom will send me one....hint hint.

Okay, so I've slowed down a little in my quilting....but I have big DREAMS of more quilts! And seems like plenty of reasons. I am a couple of gifts behind the curve in the family (I have two to tie and send out...sorry family) but I did get the quilt below done for a wedding at our church. Of course, the blocks were done, just had to piece and border, tack and TADAA! My friend and neighbor helped me tie it so I was able to get it done in time for the wedding. I love this pattern, it's called By Chance, and I absolutely did it randomly which produces the best look...at least I think so. See how the whole squares are bunched and the smaller ones are grouped...I just threw them all on the floor and left them that way unless too many reds were together. Love it!

Some fabrics are just too pretty to cut up, and that's how my friend PJ felt about this Holly Hobby fabric she used for her grandaughter's quilt. She embroidered between the pictures to quilt it and it's a lovely affect, too bad it doesn't show up as much as it did in the emailed photo.

Logan is now in his "big boy bed" and needed a bigger quilt. His baby quilt was actually one I had made for his mother while she was in college. She had always thought to use it for her first baby and decorated the room accordingly, yellow and blue. I added the yellow trim to this quilt to match the yellow walls in his current bedroom.

Steph calls Logan, "Logan Bear" and "Bear" all the time so when I found this fabric, it had to be for him.

I think the pictures look like pages from a story book and could give hours of fun making up stories about the characters at bedtime.

Now that Logan has his own quilt, the blue and yellow one that I made for her is back in the livingroom for her use.

Yellow Brick Road in 30's fabrics with a yellow and blue border. My niece has adopted a little girl and she mentioned in her blog the variety of colors in the baby's room which is part office, part baby room. So these colors filled the bill I think. The back is the same fabric as the border, a lovely print I got in No Waterford at the Kedarburn Quilt Shop.

I have 6 squares left of the Yellow Brick Road....wonder what I'll make next?

Take 3 is the name of this quilt. I have seen it done by my friend Arlene a little differently than this but I like the randomness of this pattern. I did the closeups so to show off the cute baby faces on the fabric but it didn't quite come out large enough. This one is for a Nephew in Virginia whose wife had a baby in August, within hours of the other Nephew in Maryland....How do they do that????

Yellow Brick Road: My niece Jen is having her 4th and finally a girl! This is made of the 1930's reproduction fabrics and I think it's just the sweetest look for a baby quilt. The pieces I had for finishing were small so I did the borders in 4 different patterns and also made the binding out of scraps, a look I've done before and always wonder why I don't do it more often! I put pink flannel on the back for cuddling.

Lily's quilt, finished at last, just after her birth! Brother Bruce feels the need to sit on every quilt I lay out on the floor, just taking them for a test drive. This pattern is called By Chance from the Laps From Fats book. I love how the shapes come together. The hard work is to keep it random, we always tend to want to match or adjust when laying out the blocks. The backing fabric is flannel, you can see just a bit on the binding.

I love the colors on this, it reminds me of Maine, deep greens of the pines, blues of sky and blueberries and browns for earth. The dark red? Oh that's our thick red blood it takes to make it through the winter!

Ribbon Candy: I've seen similar quilts called ribbon candy so guess it's as good a name as any. A friend gave me the bits all cut out and I happened across a pattern in a quilt magazine that set them either in a color pattern or diagonally. I decided to just sew it and not try to arrange the colors and I love the affect of two colors coming together to create different shapes. I didn't have anyone in mind when I sewed it up, therefore it isn't finished with batting and back yet, but some grandchild will get it so I can see it from time to time....heehee. stay tuned!!

Wedding Quilt: Soft beiges and whites in all tone on tone fabrics done in the yellow brick road pattern. I had several odd bits from my neighbor who quilts so it was very easy to put together so like fabrics didn't touch although you can't tell that from the picture. Not sure the practicality of the appliqued bejeweled butterfly long term, but it can be removed if it begins to look shabby.

Twin Sisters is the name of this quilt. I was invited to a quilt demonstration by the chicadee quilters of Bridgeton last spring and this was one from the featured book. The demonstrator is the sister of Eleanor Burns a famous quilt designer and she is a designer as well.

the blocks are made with sets that are opposite each other, hence the name Twin Sisters. It's a trick to find a match.

I chose blue....because I love it....and had odd bits around. When it was done, I hated to part with it but it has to go! It is a wedding present for a former employee, she worked for us for 7 years!

Take Five is the name of this one.....done in the crib size. I had to show the backing fabric....just too cute!

This is for my nephew Matt's new baby, Blake, born in July of 06. Two of the fabrics were so similar that it's difficult to see the distinction in the photo but overall it's pleasing anyway. I added the thin red folded border to help set it off.

I have enough left over to make another one from just the first cut so..... Who Will Be Next?

This photo came from California, not sure why it's all wrinkly, but it is a photo of a quilt I made for my daughter Kate's 25th birthday.....which was 6 years ago now. Maybe they don't have irons out there! heehee

I have loved using chintzes in quilts....I have a seperate stash of them in the basement.

Note: I talked with Kate since posting and she asures me it's not wrinkly in real life....Phew! I thought I had to make her another one!

Log cabin quilt, never goes out of style in the right colors.

I hated to part with this one, but the colors don't go with my house and it was a gift for my friend Deb Barnes when she moved. I wanted the green and brown to remind her of Maine, she's originally from England, moving to Ohio.....
I think the yellow center looks like sunshine peeping through and the yellow thin border like light peeping around a door. Perhaps I'll just make another one!

Take Five is the name of this quilt pattern. I made it for Rachel Barnes, daughter of a friend and short time employee when they moved. It is a fun and easy one, I've done another since. I love the scrappy look, you cut all the pieces at once so it's very quick.

The straw hat fabric was the perfect focal fabric for a teen girl, the rest of the fabric was scraps as it only calls for 5/8 of a yard of each.

A fun teaching project with my niece Kelsey while she was visiting from Iowa this summer. The center was a pack of fat quarters and the border an assortment of prints. Kelsey hadn't sewn or ironed before so we were starting at the basics but she hung in there, sitting at the sewing machine, she would say, hands on fabric, threads to the back, presserfoot down, step on the gas , country road. I had to tell her it's a country road so she wouldn't speed off too fast! We had a great time, I'm sure she'll continue on her own as she was a good student.

Scraps again! This one I'd like to do again, it is really easy. I had a bunch of autumn colors given to me by my friend Betty (who else?) so I made this up for my son John and his wife Stephanie for an anniversary present. The colors are exactly their family room colors, the dark green is their color of their couch and loveseat so it looks perfect over the back.

This is from the book Laps from Fats, a great book with lots of great ideas. It takes more fabric than you'd suspect to do five blocks of the same pattern, so try out different arrangements.

The Blue is the Double Irish Chain quilt that is for my guests when they sleep on the couch. It hung in my livingroom for years but when we took down a wall to open up and enlarge the livingroom, there wasn't wall sapce for it, so it hangs in the computer room now....I guess it does get cold in winter down here!

The Green and Rose is a closer view of the quilt below. That Rose is one of my favorite fabrics.

Two variations on the Split Rail Fence, the blue is my newest one of that type. I made it to match my new livingroom color, oh about 3 years ago, but it ended up on a quilt rack in my now blue bedroom. It's just the right size for the foot of the bed in winter to pull up over if it's really cold.

My friend and fellow quilter Arlene and I call the border "piano keys" for lack of a better word. I got the idea for this quilt from a magazine, they used it as a table cloth on a round table which I could do at some point. Perhaps when I make a real quilt for my own bed!

Split rail fence again, this one I did years and years ago. One dismal day in winter I felt the urge for quilting so went into the small stash in my basement storage area and pulled out bags of scraps I had bought when we lived in Mass. (Mind you we've been in Maine 25 years now, so I kept those scraps for a long time) This is what I came up with and I loved it. My daughter Spring took it to college one year but I stole it back when she graduated and it is now the extra quilt in my rose guest room.

Yo-yo quilt, this one I really cheated on. I was out antiquing and found a fabric covered wooden box for sale. It was full of yo-yos not sewn together, and other crochet bits. My nostrils quivered. I asked the price of the box. The lady said $13.

At the time, I was looking for a wooden box to recover for a gift so was in the market. I said, "well I only have $7 on me". I had stuffed it into my jeans as we left the house so I wouldn't spend too much.

She said, oh, but the contents alone are worth that. I sniffed, "Oh, I just want the box". "Fine," she said, "Go ahead and take the whole thing for $7." Ohh, okay, that's fine" heeheeeheeeee all the way home! I still haven't finished sewing all the yoyos together, but it looks great when I get it out to work on it every now and then and looks great in the basket under my quilt rack.

Another quilt made with scraps. This checkerboard affect was made with left overs from a Single Irish Chain I made for our bed when we slept in the downstairs bedroom. It is actually a "quillo" meaning it makes into a pillow but the outside is so worn now, I just leave it open and hanging on my quilt rack in the livingroom.

Migrating Geese again, done with black sashing this time. This was my favorite. I think I've made three of these but don't know where the picture of the third is.....perhaps I'll come across it as I go down through my files.
In this quilt are scraps of other quilts I've done and scraps from dresses I made my girls when they were very young....and they are now in their 30's! Rarely throw a fabric away!

Scraps again, theses were some shared from other people in a class and some from my scrap bag. The design is called Migrating Geese and is very easy to do. I made up my own way of getting the borders even that worked better than the directions taught. The binding is leftover bits all sewn together. I love the affect it gives the quilt andit's not too tedious as the bits are left overs anyway. I originally made this one to hang on the wall at our restaurant but brought it home a few years ago and replaced it with something brighter.

Scrapbaskets are great places for inspiration, especially other peoples scraps! This was made with some left over Irish Chain squares and then odd scraps that my friend Betty gave me. I love the colors and it now resides on the back of my white park bench in my livingroom. Couldn't part with it when it was done!

Ahhh, Brucie's quilt we called him 7 of 7 (from startrek series) before he was born. Somewhere I have a great picture of him laying on it, I'll try to find it and add it later on.

Anyway, this is a scrap quilt, made from found fabrics from all over. The white "tone on tone" background makes it very crisp. Brucie room has green curtains and other accessories so I made this to tie all the greens together.

The back is a beautiful green checked flannel, wish I had taken a picture of that as well.

Another Christmas quilt, this one was for Phoebe. It's really a single Irish Chain quilt with the rose in the center. The back of this quilt is a light lavender with princesses, one of Phoebe's favorites.

These two quilts were made for my two grandsons, Levi and Austin.

This is Levi's, he has an ocean theme bedroom with the walls painted this deep blue. The picture is a light house if you can't make it out. I designed this quilt myself to utilize the lighthouse fabric that someone gave me. Many of the prints are nautical as well.

This is also the Yellow Brick road pattern but done in super hero fabric. This is for my super hero Austin who lives in California.

This is the yellow brick road. It looks very random but there are actually three blocks to make with various materials and then you rotate them so they don't bump up against another of the same print.

This quilt was a Christmas present (05) for my granddaughter in California, Alyssa. She actually picked out the fabric for the back herself, not knowing her mother would send it to me to back the quilt.

A flannel "cheater" I call them. I machine quilted around the blocks, backed it with the yellow flannel. This one went to Willow, Brucie's girlfriend down in Pa. She's a little older than Bruce but he seems to like the older women.

Another baby quilt, this one was made for one of Bruce's nephew's baby. I used leftover squares of green from the quilt I had made for my grandson Bruce, and fussy cut the bear squares. I wanted to do this one again recently (for another nephew's offsping) but didn't find any suitable baby fabrics where I was shopping. You'll see what I came up with instead....it was fun.

Happy Birthday to Alex! Alex turned 13 in 05 and seeing as he still has his baby quilt that I made him, I thought he needed a new one to start his teens. These are the colors of his favorite soccer team in England. It is the traditional split rail fence pattern. Now he is 14 and started working for me in the restaurant!

This quilt was made to resemble the Finnish flag. My friend Pirjo is from Finland so I made this for her youngest son as a wedding present. It is a traditional log cabin with a white center instead of the traditional black or red. (The center block represents the center of the home, the hearth or stove) The trick with this one was that I tied it in blue and white so the ties wouldn't contrast too much with the background.

This is a quilt I did for a couple in our church who did their premarital counseling with us. I never told them the name of the quilt is the contrary wife! I used two shades of mottled purple, a technique that I saw in a book to add interest. The pattern was from a website that sends me newsletters, part of "about.com".

This quilt was made by Spring and I for her daughter Phoebe while Spring was on bedrest with a difficult pregnancy. She hand sewed the pieces together and I hand quilted it. It helped to pass the time for Spring as she spent half time at my house and half time at hers. Phoebe was born a month or so early but has long since caught up with herself and I had to make her a new quilt for Christmas last year!

This is Molly's (Springs second daughter) baby quilt. It is a split rail fence style but with all scraps so it doesn't form the traditional Z pattern down the quilt. The border and back fabric cost me more than the whole quilt but you know how certain fabrics just jump off the shelves!

In the works. Last year I spent 3 days at my friend Pirjo in Massachusetts and we did nothing but quilt and eat with a little sleeping thrown in. We worked on about 8 quilts, in various stages. This is one we got sewn, I might find a later picture. I've forgotten who they all were for but some went to Finland as gifts to her family over there and some were for her grandchildren here in the States. The fabric was all scraps given to me by a friend so it was an inexpensive but fun getaway.
